Did you know that a worker is considered exposed to heights when their center of gravity is more than 5-ft off the ground? For construction laborers, 62.2% of workers report that their jobs experience exposure to heights*.
In 2020, construction laborers accounted for 27.8% of falls, slips or trips* among workers in construction and extraction occupations.
And most of these were falls to a lower level — less than 20-ft.
These stats tell us that workers doing tasks at height are at greater risk of injury from falling.
In addition, these same workers are also at higher risk of stress injuries due to the frequent bending, climbing, turning, balancing and reaching that occurs when using traditional methods, like ladders and scaffolding, of getting to work at height.
So, what can you do to help mitigate the risks associated with working at height and reduce injuries from worker fatigue?
Try using low-level access lifts (aka small man lifts) as a safe alternative to ladders and scaffolding.
Reduce risk, improve productivity
Ladders and scaffolding simply cannot measure up to modern-day safety and productivity standards. They just aren’t worth the risk.
To help revolutionize the way you carry out construction and maintenance work, low-level access MEWPs (mobile elevating work platforms) like JLG’s EcoLifts and 830/1030P push-around lifts, offer a better way to access work at low-level heights. For example, because their platforms can be adjusted up and down, low-level access lifts allow you to reach your required working height in the most comfortable and efficient position, improving work speed and accuracy.
By enabling safe, ergonomic working positions, using low-level access products can significantly reduce time lost from accidents and repetitive strain injury (RSI) complaints. Not to mention saving on the extra costs associated with absenteeism, project delays and possible fines — or even missing out on new projects.
Also, the footprint of these machines and their lower weight compared to standard scissor lifts improve productivity by offering more maneuverability and increasing application flexibility on work sites. Especially where space and weight are key factors.
There are safety and productivity gains to be made on so many levels.
Choose the right lift
Whatever your level of access requirement, JLG has a MEWP for your job.
Our low-level access line offers productivity- and safety-boosting benefits, like 360-degree, hands-free operation, multiple lanyard attachment points, tool trays and enclosed platforms. You can fit into tight spaces and reposition easily thanks to these models’ compact dimensions. Plus, these lifts are lightweight enough for use on sensitive flooring and in elevators.
And, speaking of working in sensitive environments, no batteries or hydraulics, the EcoLift 50 and 70 models offer eco-friendly operation on every work site because there are no leaks, there is no charging required and they make no noise.
Work to be done
Small man lifts help get the job done in many industries and applications. For example, you can use a human-powered lift like the EcoLift for finishing work, like installing light bulb fixtures or sprinklers. Or use our powered lifts to complete a range of contractors’ tasks, from drywall work and painting to HVAC and electrical work.
And, both types of machines are ideal for tackling general facility maintenance tasks, too, like cleaning windows, changing out seasonal décor and retail displays, changing light bulbs, accessing duct work, repairing ceiling tiles, working on mounted or suspended A/V equipment and so on. The possibilities are endless.

Elevate to evolve
Humans have used ladders and scaffolding for hundreds of years. But now, it’s time to evolve your worksites with low-level access lifts — products designed to help you comfortably and safely reach tasks at lower heights.
