Bolt Usage and Torque Application

Tech Tips - Jan 18

It is extremely important to use bolts of proper length. When replacing bolts, use one that has the same specifications of the original, or one that is equivalent.

A bolt that is too long will hit the bottom before the head is tight against its related part. If a bolt is too short, there will not be enough thread area to engage and hold the part properly. Unless specific torque requirements are given within the repair procedure or text, standard torque values should be used on heat-treated bolts, studs and steel nuts, in accordance with recommended shop practices. Refer to the torque chart in your machine’s service manual.
