Ready to Work: JLG’s New SkyTrak® 8042 Telehandler

In 2023, JLG announced the redesign of its popular SkyTrak^® telehandlers, starting with the 6034 and 6042 models. One year later, an all-new SkyTrak 8042 model is also now available. It was redeveloped from the ground up to be durable and dependable, meant to be worked every day.

Built to deliver the performance and reliability customers expect from JLG’s iconic SkyTrak^® telehandler brand, the 8042 incorporates customers’ most requested features and capabilities. These include a lightweight design, hydrostatic transmission, advanced control system, electric-over-hydraulic joystick, and data at a glance to increase operators’ productivity and boost overall job performance in pick-and-place applications. This next-generation SkyTrak telehandler is designed to efficiently handle, load, and unload bulk materials, making it ready to work on the most demanding commercial and industrial job sites across America.

With an operating weight of 21,200-lb / 9,616-kg, this new-generation SkyTrak telehandler shares the same all-steel construction as the previous model yet has a lightweight design that optimizes the boom and frame for more efficient and cost-effective transport. It can transport up to two 8042s on a single flatbed trailer.

The 8042 model also features a 74-hp, 2.9-L Deutz diesel engine that does not require diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), reducing maintenance costs. And, it is equipped with JLG’s Stabil-Trak stabilization system, which offers fully automatic rear axle stabilization. This system automatically transfers from a 3-point to a 4-point stance to enhance stability and operator confidence during load placement.

Because work never stops

We listened closely to our customers and incorporated the most requested features and capabilities into the 8042 to improve productivity and serviceability without compromise.

Productivity enhancements include:

• A hydrostatic transmission gives operators greater control and ease of operation while allowing for inching — the ability to run the boom at high speeds without shifting into neutral — for faster material delivery at height.
• Improved cab styling, a larger LCD display and more extensive single-page load charts deliver more data operators need while allowing them to focus on the job at hand.
• A multifunctional, electric-over-hydraulic joystick with auxiliary hydraulic functions and attachment tilt capabilities, single-handedly elevating job site efficiency.
• The 8042's new advanced control system allows for more options, such as Load Stability Indication (LSI) and Seatbelt Engagement and Operator Presence (SEOP), as well as immediate troubleshooting, remote diagnostics, and richer telematics through ClearSky Smart Fleet™ connectivity hardware.

Serviceability updates include:

• The refined single compensation and lift cylinder boom design relies on fewer components and streamlines maintenance, while the top-mounted telescope cylinder makes the boom easier and more accessible to maintain.
• With a 30% reduction in hydraulic hoses and connections, crews can worry less about leak points and focus more time on getting work done.

Optional accessories

The 8042 incorporates enhanced technology and functionality to meet the needs of today’s job sites. Options available on this model include:

• Load Stability Indication (LSI): Senses forward load capacity and displays color-coded visuals to help operators work more confidently.
• Seatbelt Engagement and Operator Presence: Seatbelt engagement assurance and operator presence technology combined with a high-visibility orange seatbelt helps to enhance safety through visual and audible alarms, as well as limits machine functions.
• Multi-reverse Camera System: Displays left, right and rear views from behind the machine during day or night operation on a single, tri-view monitor.
• Reverse Sensing System: When driving in reverse, an audible in-cab alarm alerts the operator of any rear obstructions.
• White Noise Back-up Alarm: Emits a directional alarm when driving in reverse to help enhance worker safety outside the machine.

Getting what needs doing done

An array of telehandler attachments for the SkyTrak 8042 telehandler keeps operators ready and adaptable, no matter the job. Attachments available for this model include:

• Standard Carriage: Forks that are fully floating and adjustable side-to-side for efficient load entry and exit (available in various sizes)
• Side-Tilt Carriage: Tilts loads from side to side and allows for minor lateral positioning of the load during final placement
• Swing Carriage: Allows for greater versatility in moving and placing materials in confined areas or when exact positioning is required
• Side-Shift Carriage: Four-inch left and right carriage shift allows for precision load placement
• Dual-Fork Positioning Carriage: Provides the ability to adjust the position of the forks, allowing the operator to handle a variety of palletized loads without having to leave the cab
• Pallet Forks: Rugged design makes it easier to handle heavy palletized material
• Lumber Forks: Wider width provides a larger surface area for stability when transporting longer material
• Cubing Forks: Allow the operator to load, unload and place cubes of brick and block with ease
• Material Bucket: This is used to clean up the job site, spread gravel, or load and level. Not designed for digging or back-digging
• Truss Boom: Allows operator to set trusses and wall sections for wood and steel building construction (available with or without winch)
• Fork-Mounted Extendable Truss: Designed for lifting and placing objects around the job site. Ideal for metal building erection, setting wooden trusses and erecting post-frame buildings
• Fork-Mounted Work Platform: Extend the capabilities of your telehandler and get more work done by lifting materials and personnel to working heights
• Coupler-Mounted Lifting Hook: For lifting and lowering objects
• Fork-Mounted Lifting Hook: Add versatility to any standard carriage by lifting and lowering objects without changing attachments

With the auxiliary hydraulic connections relocated to the side of the boom head, changing attachments on SkyTrak telehandlers is incredibly efficient.
