Steel erection work is crucial in constructing commercial buildings, industrial warehouses, hangars, bridges, sports stadiums, multi-story residential buildings and so much more. As the backbone of modern infrastructure, steel structures require precision, skill and the right equipment to assemble safely and efficiently. Two types of machinery that have become indispensable in this field are mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) and telehandlers.

Let's explore how JLG® access equipment enhances safety and efficiency in steel erection applications…

MEWPs for steel erection at a glance

MEWPs: Reaching Work at Height

MEWPs, including vertical lifts, are equipment solutions for ironworkers and steel erectors to access steelwork during erection. This includes lining up steel and bolting pieces into place after cranes lift them. These machines provide a stable, elevated platform that allows workers to get into hard-to-reach areas.

Here's how JLG MEWPs are used in steel erection work:

Improved Access

MEWPs can be used when erecting steel structures, allowing workers to reach precise locations for joining steel sections.

JLG HC3 boom lifts are ideal machines for this type of work. With their ability to lift up to 1,000-lb (454 kg), JLG HC3 boom lifts carry more weight to height, including up to three workers with their tools plus materials. This dramatically reduces the need for multiple trips and additional equipment, increasing efficiency and productivity by allowing teams to accomplish more in less time. The HC3 boom lifts feature three distinct working zones to enhance both safety and operational efficiency: An unrestricted 660-lb (300-kg) zone and two restricted zones of 750-lb (340-kg) and 1,000-lb (454-kg). As the machine moves between these zones, the system automatically adjusts the lifting capacity to match operational demands and ensure safety. This intelligent feature prevents overloading and maintains stability, giving operators the confidence to work at height with heavy loads. JLG also incorporated a zero-calibration, automatic load sensing system into its HC3 boom lifts, keeping an HC3 machine within its allowable work envelope by limiting range based on platform load. If an overload situation occurs, operators can appropriately respond by removing or unloading items, and the machine will recognize when it's back within its rated capacity, allowing operations to resume work.

Once the building construction is completed, MEWPs like JLG ERT and RT rough terrain scissor lifts and JLG slab scissor lifts are used to install the building’s utilities, such as fire suppression, plumbing, electrical grids and HVAC systems, as well as for fit-out and finish work, such as doors, windows, vents, lights, fire alarms, and sprinklers, as well as for painting, system testing, cleaning and other maintenance tasks.

JLG also offers a line of accessories and add-ons, including the Mid Rail Deck, Bolt-on External Fall Arrest System and SkyWelder® System, to help ironworkers complete steel erection work at height.

Navigating Job Sites

Compared to traditional methods like scaffolding or ladders, MEWPs offer a stable working environment at height. Features like JLG's SkyGuard® technology further boost operator confidence and protection. JLG’s unique self-leveling chassis technology allows a boom lift to automatically level on grades up to 10 degrees, enabling productive operation on uneven job site terrain. JLG variable tilt technology for scissor lifts includes sensors that detect the slope the machine is on and can limit the lift's maximum deck elevation to ensure it stays within its work envelope.

Versatility

Operators can use MEWPs to assist with various work-at-height tasks, from installing girders and beams to placing roof decking and wall sheeting.

Efficiency

Using a MEWP is often more efficient than building scaffolding, reducing setup time and increasing overall productivity.

Telehandlers: Precision in Material Handling

While MEWPs excel at providing access, telehandlers shine in material handling. These machines are essential for moving, stacking and lifting prefabricated steel components.

Here's how JLG telehandlers contribute to steel erection projects:

Heavy Lifting

JLG high-capacity and high-reach telehandlers can efficiently move substantial steel sections around the job site, reducing the need for multiple pieces of equipment.

Precision Placement

With their extendable booms and 360-degree rotation capabilities, JLG rotating telehandlers can place steel components exactly where needed, even in tight or crowded urban construction sites.

Adaptable

Telehandlers can be fitted with various attachments, making them adaptable to different tasks throughout the different phases of the construction process, including installing landscaping and hardscaping elements once the building is completed.

Streamline Operations

Telehandlers streamline material handling to keep the project moving smoothly and on schedule by loading/unloading, picking, placing and transporting project materials around the worksite. Once the building is finished, they are also used for groundskeeping and outdoor maintenance tasks.

Key Considerations for Using MEWPs and Telehandlers in Steel Erection

When incorporating JLG access equipment into your steel erection project, keep the following points in mind:

Weight Capacity

Always check the weight capacity of the MEWP or telehandler against the load you're lifting or the number of workers and tools on the platform.

Ground Conditions

To prevent tipping, ensure the ground is stable and capable of supporting the weight of the equipment. Ground conditions can vary greatly from task to task, from working on undeveloped terrain one day to concrete slabs the next. To best prepare steel erection crews for different surfaces, consider two specs: 1) Floor load capacity and 2) machine ground bearing pressure

Weather Conditions

Steel erection often occurs in challenging weather. To operate these machines safely in various conditions, follow the manufacturer’s recommended guidelines outlined in the machine’s Operation & Safety Manuals.

Operator Training

Proper training is essential for the safe and efficient operation of MEWPs and telehandlers. JLG University offers aerial lift training, scissor lift training, and telehandler training courses designed to ensure that ironworkers comply with the most up-to-date ANSI standards and OSHA regulations. From online supervisor training to operator and equipment service training, JLG’s comprehensive training is tailored to fit steel erectors’ needs through customized learning paths, interactive learning tools and more.

Project-Specific Requirements

When selecting equipment, consider your project's unique needs. JLG offers customizable options and featured innovations to meet specific job site demands.
